If you ever wanted to have a quintessential OC Night, might I invite you to Mastro’s Ocean Club? – so you can get a taste of good food, good wine, and especially… and here’s the cheese – good old-fashioned people watching.
Expect to get there early to grab a seat. Imagine getting on the NYC subway and you see a seat and you’re like “OMG, seriously I can’t believe there’s an empty seat for me.” and just like a NYC subway you will probably be sitting next to some interesting characters.
The service at the bar on busy nights is slow and it can be hard to get the bartender’s attention if you do not carry a blow horn with you. Be prepared to wait and then wait some more. It gives you plenty of time to look over their extensive wine and cocktail menu. Food is a bit pricey, but very tasty.
Their cocktail menu is a nice blend of classics and craft cocktails specific to Mastro’s. I always seem to get the Elderflower Martini made with Belvedere Citrus Vodka, Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, and fresh lemon. It tastes like a floral lemon drop and served with a sugar rim. They make the martinis in a cocktail shaker and leave the leftovers in the shaker for you. For $19 you can get about 2 1/2 cocktails.
The People Watching:
Now that you are comfortably seated at the bar and enjoying a cocktail it’s time to catch up with your friends you came with…. hahaha just kidding! It’s time to people watch. Mastro’s has the best people watching and conversation eaves dropping you’ve ever witnessed! There are all types of OC Locals at Mastro’s: the girl’s night out bunch, the after work squad, the dudes trying to get with the girl’s night out bunch, the tinder dates – yes we actually had a convo with a girl and guy on their first Tinder date (the guy even bought me and my friends’ drinks!) – Thanks Random Tinder Guy!
The menu features many foodie favorites including shrimp cocktail, beef carpaccio, ahi tuna tartare, oysters Rockefeller, and Ocean Club crab cakes. I decided to go the more comfort food route and choose the Gorgonzola Mac and Cheese. I’m a huge mac and cheese aficionado and I will say, Mastro’s comes through as one of my faves. It was so cheesy, I could barely get the fork out. For $14 the portion is quite large enough to take home and save for a midnight snack to curb the drunk cravings.
This is a picture of the wine the Random Tinder Guy bought me. It was Terrazas Reserva Malbec. I love Malbecs and this one did not disappoint and even tasted better because it was free! I ended up having two glasses and it was the perfect ending to an eventful night at the Mastro’s Bar.
Mastro’s Ocean Club is located at the Crystal Cove Shopping Center at 8112 East Coast Highway. (949)376-6990.
