Doughnuts are by far one of our favorite sweet treats, and they are FINALLY making a culinary comeback on the food scene. We cannot tell you how over the cupcake craze we are. It’s just been done and then overdone.
Poor doughnuts have been left in the shadows not living up to their full delicious potential. The innovative team at PoqetDONUTS in Irvine has created a new experience where guests can customize their very own doughnuts with an extensive selection of glazes, fillings and toppings.
They also have an incredible variety of gourmet doughnut creations including Avocado, Burnt Pistachio, Blueberry, Pumpkin Spice, Tiramisu, Nutella, and Green Tea. I am usually just a simple glaze twist kind of a girl, but was so impressed by the quality and taste of these doughnuts, which were light and flavorful, without being too overpowering.
What’s better than strawberries, chocolate and bubbles? It’s basically the trifecta of happiness. We paired Poqet’s Strawberry Vegan doughnut, which is topped with a decadent strawberry glaze and chocolate frosting, with our go-to bubbles, Larmaca Prosecco. Larmaca is a very nice Brut Prosecco from Italy, and for $12 a bottle, it’s a staple in our house. This beautiful doughnut and Larmaca’s Tiffany blue label is the perfect pair for a girl’s night in, or nice romantic treat. (Valentine’s Day is right around the corner… Hint. Hint.)
The Samoa doughnut was incredible that we wish the Girl Scouts would package them and bring a dozen to our door. A chocolate devils food doughnut with a light chocolate glaze topped with toasted coconut and a drizzle of chocolate frosting, pairs perfectly with a Pinot Nior. We love Iron Horse Pinot Nior from Russian River, Sonoma County. It’s full-bodies but has a nice light quality, which goes nicely with the chocolate and coconut combo. The Samoa donut was also, to our surprise, part of PoqetDONUTS’ vegan selection. It was so moist and light that we could not believe it was vegan. Hands down the best vegan donuts we have ever had.
Lemon Meringue donuts and Rose are a perfect sweet and tangy combination. Charles & Charles Rose has bright acidity and is citrus dominate, which goes well with the light lemony flavor of the donut, and the sweetness of the Meringue dollop on top.The color combo is also fun and girly for a night of binge watching Sex and the City with your girlfriends.
Last but definitely not least, the Green Tea was a pleasant new taste to the doughnut line up. It’s light, green tea flavor pairs well with a dry, crisp white, such as a Pinot Grigio. Chardwell Hill, from Oregon, has a wonderful Pinot Gris that features green apple flavors mingled with citrus and a strong acid backbone, which cuts away the sweetness of the doughnut. There is also a hint of banana and honey, which also enhances the green tea flavor.
